Indigo Envie

Indigo Envie is a writer, director and actor of Tanzanian and Dutch descent. I started my acting journey at the age of twelve, booking the lead role in my end-of-school musical. Shortly I realized I didn’t see any actors that looked like me on the stage. At the time, I was looking for Black women on stage in the Netherlands. I realized, if I want to continue working as an actor, it will have to be in TV or film. I saw people that looked like me in TV and film productions shot in the UK and the US, and so I auditioned for schools focusing on Acting for Film in both those countries. I got a scholarship, and at 17, I was on my way to the US to study at a film academy.

I studied and worked an actor and model in Los Angeles for about five years, before moving back to the Netherlands due to visas ending and covid starting. Getting a break in overpiling work, I had space to focus on my transition. I transitioned in The Netherlands, but still continued working in film, now more behind the camera, in the art department and as an assistant director.

Now, I am back in New York with a brand new visa, working as a director, actor and writer. As a filmmaker, instead of focussing on the pain and struggle that are so often visualized in trans characters, I aspire to make films that showcase the beauty and softness that is present in trans lives. I am curious to continue exploring the nuances that live within an individual and I strive to showcase this nuance of people in the trans community through head-strong, wellrounded threedimensional fictional characters.
